Florence Elliott lived a long and interesting life. She started her adventures by running away with a traveling salesman. She became a published poet, traveled the world, and had many adventures. Florence was personable and everyone who met her remembered her drive and spunk. She started her own business making and selling Stress-Away cards, and was also an award winning hairdresser. For many years she was a member of Toastmasters, The Crones Counsel of Wise Women and the NLAPW.
At 90 she threw herself a birthday party at the Brown Palace, and got her first tattoo. She almost always wore red shoes, and sent “red socks of courage” to a friend who was going through a traumatic time in the hospital.
Florence only began to decline in the last few years. In 2019 her mental and physical health no longer allowed her to remain in her home. She was finally moved to a senior facility where she told me she was quite content. She was hospitalized several times this year and finally transitioned peacefully on September 17.
“I shall miss her terribly. I shall miss her poetry, her red shoes, her life stories. I shall miss our phone calls, our shared birthday lunches, our visits.” Kelly Ann Compton
A memorial service will be held for Florence on what would have been her 97th birthday; October 15. The service will be held at Pine Grove Crossing Assisted Living Center in Parker.
She was laid to rest in Upton KY next to her son, and daughter-in-law.
